Can Couples Live Together in Assisted Living?

Staying Together When Care Is Needed

Yes. Many assisted living communities and board and care homes welcome couples, usually in a shared room. Each partner gets the care they need, even when one needs much more help than the other.

Here's how it works and what to ask before you choose.

How couples live together

A shared room

The most common setup is one larger room for both partners, with their own furniture, photos and bedding so it feels like home.

Separate rooms nearby

Some couples prefer two rooms close together, for example when one partner sleeps poorly or needs care at night.

Shared daily life

Either way, couples eat together, spend the day together and keep their routines.

When care needs are different

It's common for one partner to need much more help, for example because of dementia or limited mobility. A good home builds a separate care plan for each person, so the healthier partner can be a spouse again rather than a full-time caregiver.

Questions to ask

Is there a room that fits two people comfortably?

Ask to see it, and check that there's room for two beds or a larger bed, plus walkers or wheelchairs.

How is the monthly cost set for two?

Ask how the room and each person's care are priced, and what happens to the rate if one partner's needs change.

What happens if one partner needs more care later?

Ask whether the home can care for both as needs grow, including dementia and hospice, so you aren't separated later.

What if one partner passes away?

Ask whether the surviving partner can stay in the same room or move to a private room in the same home.

A Home, Not a Facility

Era Life Home is a small residential care home — not a large institution. That means fewer residents, more personalized attention, and a living environment that truly feels like home. Our caregivers know each resident by name, by preference, and by heart.
