How to Check a California Care Home's License and Inspection Record

A Five-Minute Check Every Family Should Do

Every assisted living and board and care home in California must be licensed by the state Department of Social Services. You can look up any home's license, inspection visits and complaint reports for free on the state's Care Facility Search website.

Here's how to do it, and how to make sense of what you find.

How to look up a care home

1. Open the state's Care Facility Search

Go to ccld.dss.ca.gov/carefacilitysearch, run by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division. It's free and needs no account.

2. Find the home

Search by the home's name, license number or city. Licensed homes for seniors are listed as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), whether they call themselves assisted living or board and care.

3. Check the basics

Confirm the license is active and that the name and address match what the home told you.

4. Read the visit and complaint reports

The site shows up to five years of information, including complaint investigation reports. Read what was alleged, what the inspector found and what the home did to fix it.

5. Call the regional office with questions

Each facility's record lists its local Regional Office. Call them for more detail about any citation.

What citations mean

Type A

The more serious kind: a problem that posed an immediate or substantial risk to residents' health, safety or personal rights.

Type B

A less serious deficiency that could become a risk if not fixed, often about records, postings or upkeep.

How to read what you find

Look for patterns, not a single entry

One old, minor citation that was fixed quickly means something very different from repeated serious ones.

Check how recent it is

Recent problems matter more than ones from years ago, especially if ownership or staff have changed since.

Ask the home about it

A good home will explain any citation openly and tell you what changed afterward.

How to report a concern

If you're worried about a resident's care or safety, contact Community Care Licensing at 844-538-8766 or file online at complaints.ccld.dss.ca.gov. In an emergency, call 911.

A Home, Not a Facility

Era Life Home is a small residential care home — not a large institution. That means fewer residents, more personalized attention, and a living environment that truly feels like home. Our caregivers know each resident by name, by preference, and by heart.
